6/29/2023 0 Comments Seveneves book review![]() The fact that Stephenson was as an advisor for the Blue Origins asteroid mining company no doubt helped him write Seveneves. Set on a lifelike Earth humanity only has existing technology to adapt to living in space. While this is a familiar trope made famous by the likes of Battlestar Galactica, there are no starships or warp drives here. Seveneves follows 5,000 years of human history from the feverish race to escape Earth and the difficulties of surviving in space, to the eventual return to the planet that was once home. ![]() ‘What do you expect from the author of Snow Crash?’ fans will say, but those uninitiated should be warned. ![]() Readers of Seveneves may understand this feeling of information overload as they struggle to penetrate the detail-heavy prose of this interstellar epic. Later, one of a few hundred survivors living on a International Space Station worries about a planning meeting, while Earth is a raging fireball below. Rather than listen to his speech, the celebrity scientist stood behind her wonders about the grey streak in the President’s hair. ![]() Unable to process a cataclysm of apocalyptic proportions, it focuses on small, mundane details instead, according to Seveneves.Īfter the moon explodes, the President of the United States breaks the bad news that we’re all doomed. The mind can only absorb so much information. ![]()

The scene I mentioned earlier - how Travis portrays the emotions of what everyone was feeling was incredible. He keeps the same voices from book to book, never over dramatizes - he’s about as perfect of a narrater you will ever listen to. Baldree brings them to life with his voice. Rather like a child, is the way he is described. ![]() Eithan, despite telling us that he is in it for the long haul, and need companions who are driven to succeed, does not seem focused on success himself. And how much he has grown to love those around him. Cons: The book is good enough that my cons are all pretty minor. What I also love about the book (and the others) is there is a lot of humor at the right times! I’m not going to give any spoilers but there is one part towards the end where I sat straight up and shouted “I KNEW IT! I KNEW IT!!” I was laughing and crying because now you understand the journey - you understand why he did what he did. Also, there are times in this book I found myself holding my breath wondering how it was going to turn out. The characters are great, you either love them & want them to win/succeed or you hate them & you want them to be destroyed. When I can’t decide on what to listen to, I listen to these. I absolutely loved this book, as I do all the other books in this series. Loved it!
